Safe Kitchen for Kids: Viking Appliances and Family Safety

2025-11-286 min read

Your family's safety is the top priority. Learn practical tips for keeping children safe around Viking ranges, ovens, and other kitchen appliances.

Why Kitchen Safety Matters with Viking Appliances

Viking appliances are built for serious cooking performance, which means higher BTU burners and commercial-grade heat. While this is wonderful for preparing family meals, it also means we need to be extra thoughtful about safety when children are in the kitchen. Here are practical steps every family should take.

Range and Cooktop Safety

Always turn pot handles inward so children cannot reach up and grab them. Use the back burners when possible, especially when little ones are nearby. Consider installing stove knob covers that prevent children from turning on burners. Many Viking ranges have a control lockout feature. Learn how to activate it and use it when the range is not in use.

Oven Safety for Families

The exterior of a Viking oven can get hot during operation. Teach children that the oven door is not something to lean on or play with. Enable the child lock feature when the oven is not in use. If your oven is at a height where children can reach the door, consider a door lock accessory.

Refrigerator Considerations

While refrigerators are not as immediately dangerous as hot appliances, children can sometimes try to climb on open doors or play inside. Keep the area around the refrigerator clear and teach children that it is not a toy. Ensure the door closes properly so cold air stays in and food stays safe.

Dishwasher Safety

Keep the dishwasher door closed when loading sharp utensils. Knives should always go point-down in the utensil basket. If your dishwasher uses pods or tablets, store them out of children's reach. These can look like candy to little ones but are quite harmful if ingested.

Creating a Family Safety Plan

Make sure every family member knows where the gas shut-off valve is located. Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and know how to use it. Establish clear rules about when children can be in the kitchen during cooking and create a safe zone where they can watch and learn without being in harm's way.
